Joomla Video Tutorials. For beginners. The fun starts now! |
|
OK, so you made it this far. Hopefully you watched all of the videos in the BASICS section and know enough to be dangerous.
You will need be familiar with the following terms as we delve into Joomla further.
- JPG | GIF | PNG - Click each one and read the definitions. Return to this page.
- Fireworks | Photoshop | GIMP - These are graphics programs. If you do not have one you will need to get one or have a friend who does. You'll need to make some nice new graphics and not use crappy clip art. We'll also be resizing images before we upload them into Joomla. (If you use MSPaint, we do not want to know about it.:-)
- WYSIWYG - Acronym for "What You See Is What You Get". It's an oldie but a goodie. We're gonna use one and download a new one.
- FTP - File Transfer Protocol
Joomla Specific Terms
- Component: Content elements, or applications, that are usually displayed in the centre of the main content area of a template. This depends on the design of the template in use. Components make up much of the core elements of Joomla!'s functionality. These core elements include Banners, Contact, News Feeds, Polls, and Web Links. Members of the Joomla! community produce third party Joomla! Components on a continuous basis. They are freely available to download from Joomla! Extensions Directory and a number of other web sites. See also: Modules, Mambots.
- Module: Small display Items with content that can be displayed anywhere that your template permits. Modules are, generally, very easy to install in the Administrator (Back-end). The Joomla! Core includes: Main Menu, Top Menu, Template Chooser, Polls, Newsflash, and Hit Counter amongst others. Members of the Joomla! Community also produce Joomla! Modules on a continuous basis. They are freely available on Joomla! Extensions Directory for download.
- Mambots: Small, task-oriented function that intercepts content before it is displayed and manipulates it in some way. Joomla! provides a number of Mambots in the Core distribution, such as WYSIWYG editors, 3rd party Component and Module searchers, etc.
If at any time you hear something and you aren't quite sure what it means, head on over to the Joomla Glossary, find the term, read it and come on back. The Joomla Glossary is here: http://help.joomla.org/content/view/100/148/1/1/
